Mesothelioma - Are You Alert?

The internal organs of the human body are covered in a protective sac called the mesothelium. Examples of mesothelilial membranes are the peritoneum (abdominal organs), pleura (lungs), and pericardium (heart).

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium. The case is, the cells of the mesothelium start to divide uncontrolled and then become cancerous. This will cause the possible invasion of organs and tissues nearby the mesothelium. Mesothelioma usually starts in the pleura or peritoneum as a tumor (cancerous or non-cancerous) that affects the chest or abdomen lining.

According to the statistics, men are commonly affected and among them whites are more than the others. Approximately 3,000 cases occurs each year in the US, and most of them ranges from 50 to 70 years old. Moreover, mesothelioma is found to occur among those who work in asbestos related industries, shipyards, and the heating and construction businesses.

This disease is difficult to treat. It depends on the location of the cancer, the progression of the disease, the age and the state of health of the patient. That said, only the oncologist, who specializes in the disease, can decide on what kind of treatment is best to be taken. Some of the options include: surgery, radiation, chemotheraphy, biological therapy, gene therapy and immunotherapy.

Before the Internet era, it was very hard to look for any information regarding mesothelioma. Now, there's nothing limiting you to know what you want to know if you observe wholeheartedly.
